DREAMFALL CHAPTERS- Xbox One version (available on others)

A Cyberpunk world. A Steampunk world. A complicated story that gets more and more complicated as it goes on, dedicating resource to seemingly endless cut scenes to tell it. Likable characters, super powers, light action, heavy puzzle/problem solving. Fantastic game, but as well, often times it becomes annoying. I loved it, except for the parts that irritated me. This is Dreamfall Chapters. I downloaded and played through the Xbox One version. I also sat through cut scenes that seemed to go on forever. These cut scenes would take forever to load in, as well, one at a time. I had difficulty following the story. I may look on the internet for the entire set of cut scenes and watch them all back-to-back to try to get a better idea. I do this with movies with complicated stories- I will watch them several times. But I don't think I'll be PLAYING through this game again anytime soon. Now don't get me wrong. I like Steampunk and I LIVE for Cyberpunk,...

Loading Human Chapter One - PSVR Review

Some current PSVR games have wonky controls, compared to what I have come to be used to playing 3D games that aren't VR. I know it can be done, as in the case of Battlezone for PSVR, with it's smooth-as-silk controls, as well as a scheme that is familiar. I realize that a day is coming when 3D VR games will have reached a kind of standard for control when traversing a 3D environment. I look forward to that day.      That being said, the controls in Loading Human weren't bad enough to make me return the game, and the graphics and strange story were enough to make me play this short "Chapter One" to the end. Not a large feat, but not exactly smooth sailing either.  The musical score is mostly a heavy-synthesizer laden New Age kind of groove, I REALLY liked that.      You begin in an Antarctic research base owned by your 137-year-old father, who, humorously enough, is dying and needs you to venture out to a distant spot in the ...

State of Mind- Nintendo Switch Review

I have enjoyed Cyberpunk games over the years, some with RPG elements mixed with action like Omikron: The Nomad Soul (Sega Dreamcast version), or those with more action like Ghost In the Shell Stand Alone Complex and Oni (PS2 versions). Hell, I am a tech-worshipper from way back and consider myself a cyberpunk (with emphasis on the “punk”). I am a big fan of movies like Blade Runner and The Matrix. I love the imagery and the “technology-of-the-near-future” presented in the games and movies of this genre. Because of this I was immediately drawn in by the description of State of Mind on the Nintendo Switch. Reading and looking at the pictures, as well as looking online outside of the E-Shop I was able to determine that this would probably be a good download game, even though it had a $40+ price tag.      I was pleased, the whole way through the game. It delivered solid game play, which in all honesty should have been easy as there was very little act...

HELLBLADE: SENUA'S SACRIFICE

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice Released August 2017 by Ninja Theory Xbox One version      Before I get into this let me point out I don’t read other reviews of games before I write my own. I have mixed feelings about this one, but overall I’m feeling the love for this game.     The time period is, well, ancient. The Runes appear to be Nordic, so let that be an indicator as to where and when this story takes place. I am not an expert on Nordic runes or ancient history in general, so, history buffs, feel free to leave comments about this. Senua is a young girl, a warrior in her own right, who has lost her lover, Dylan (I hope I spelled that right). He is dead, and she decides, essentially, to go to Hell to bring him back.      If this sounds insane, it is. You see Senua suffers from psychosis. The game designers painstakingly tried to reproduce what psychosis is like, and Senua’s head is constantly full of other voices commen...

GOLDENEYE 007 - Nintendo DS

GoldenEye 007 – Nintendo DS Released Nov. 2010 Everyone remembers the genre-defining First-Person Shooter GoldenEye 007 on Nintendo 64, at least I hope they do. This game raised the bar for FPSs during that era, and none of the competing systems had a game that came close to this game. GoldenEye 007 on the Nintendo DS is a “re-imagining” of that fantastic game. It is a half-decent “on-the-go” version of GoldenEye, with emphasis on the “half”. It is most certainly not “decent”. I played this game on the (original) 3DSXL, which only means I had the added comfort of an analog stick. This came in handy as I doubt I would have finished the game without it. But first things first. The story is generally the same as the N64 version, but the levels look different. The graphics aren't as smooth and polished as the original, but it is a FPS that does NOT require the damned stylus to get through it. Thank you, Nintendo, for that. There were too many FPSs for the DS t...

UNCHARTED 4: A Thief's End PS4

UNCHARTED 4- A Thief's End Released May 2016 This review will be quick. There is no reason to linger on this game. It is probably as close to perfect as I've seen in a modern video game. It is certainly no wonder that the new Tomb Raider installations copy the Uncharted formula so closely. This game is a must-play on the PS4. Get it, or sell your PS4 because you aren't getting the best out of it. The graphics are phenomenal on the PS4 and the controls are perfect. No camera problems, no clunky controls at ANY point in this game. Nauseating heights are reached through climbing and jumping, the shooting combat is rock-solid, there is nothing bad I can say about this game. Solid story and plot, and we get to meet Nathan Drake's brother. But no spoilers here. Supposedly the last one in the franchise. Hmmm… Anyway, all-but perfect game, rare that I give such a score. Get it or sell your PS4, you are not worthy. Never met an Uncharted game I didn'...

UNCHARTED: Golden Abyss for PS Vita

Uncharted:Golden Abyss for PS Vita Released Dec, 2011      Having played and finished every Uncharted game to date puts me in a strange position. I want to like the Playstation Vita’s Uncharted offering, I really do. That being said, the honest truth is that I do like it, despite the fact that when compared to the PS3 Uncharteds, Golden Abyss just doesn’t measure up. Perhaps I excuse it because it is, after all, merely a portable Nathan Drake story. I remind myself that the Vita was supposed to be the wonder machine that closed the gap between portable and console gaming. Not so if one uses this game as a measurement.      There are areas of pointless gimmicky controls, both touchscreen and the sensitive back of the machine that add nothing to the game. Hand-to-hand combat is achieved via swiping the screen in motions that follow arrows that appear. Not a bad idea if done in moderation, but the combat sequences are many times too long, to the point where i...

BOUND- PSVR Version, PS4.

BOUND- PSVR Version, PS4. Sony Interactive Entertainment Santa Monica Studio, Plastic Studios. Released August 2016      Let me start this review by telling you, the reader, a bit about my own experience with video games. I am, at the time of this writing, 49 years old with my 50th birthday only weeks away. I have been playing since the 1980s, in real, stocked arcades as well as cutting my teeth on the Atari 2600. Currently I am a collector with a massive gaming console, handheld, and game collection (that, admittedly, I am trying to scale back). I have played every genre, every kind of game from most if not every brand. The Steam service subscribes to ME. To be truthfully blunt, I have experienced it all.      Or so I thought. I have NEVER seen or played a game like this. EVER.      I have had trouble finding things that really move me on the PSVR platform; Battlezone has been great and Driveclub. But I have been disappointed by games like...
