GOLDENEYE 007 - Nintendo DS
GoldenEye 007 –
Nintendo DS
Released Nov. 2010
Everyone remembers
the genre-defining First-Person Shooter GoldenEye 007 on Nintendo 64,
at least I hope they do. This game raised the bar for FPSs during
that era, and none of the competing systems had a game that came
close to this game. GoldenEye 007 on the Nintendo DS is a
“re-imagining” of that fantastic game. It is a half-decent
“on-the-go” version of GoldenEye, with emphasis on the “half”.
It is most certainly not “decent”.
I played this game
on the (original) 3DSXL, which only means I had the added comfort of
an analog stick. This came in handy as I doubt I would have finished
the game without it. But first things first.
The story is
generally the same as the N64 version, but the levels look different.
The graphics aren't as smooth and polished as the original, but it is
a FPS that does NOT require the damned stylus to get through it.
Thank you, Nintendo, for that. There were too many FPSs for the DS
that may have been better, in my opinion, had it not been for adding
the clumsy stylus control scheme. I don't think a FPS is meant to be
played with a stylus.
That being said,
despite the fact that this game relies on classic FPS-style control,
that control is still clumsy as hell. Granted I was playing on the
3DS and using the stick. This was because the directional pad just
didn't cut it. Moving was more fluid with the stick, but I was
constantly finding myself in a crouched position. To achieve this,
one presses “down, down” in rapid succession, on stick or
directional pad. To stand up, you repeat this. Somehow, standing up
proved more difficult whether I used the stick or the pad. So I was
moving through much of the game, especially the more action-intense
parts, on my knees. Another way to get into a crouch should have been
utilized, although I have no recommendation as to what should have
been done. I am not a game designer, but I do know what doesn't work
well when I see it.
All-in-all, the game
is OK, and these days a used one comes cheap. So it's worth a spin on
your DS or 3DS. If you want a FPS that doesn't rely on a stylus, here
you go.
I'm giving GoldenEye
007 for Nintendo DS a 6/10.
