Detroit: Become Human- PS4
Quantic
Dream has created a work of genius with their game “Detroit: Become
Human”. This is a story-intensive genre-buster. I would call it an
interactive movie- NOT to be confused with 1990s “interactive
movies” like “The Daedalus Encounter” or “Burn Cycle”. No,
this interactive movie is ALL about making choices. There is
basically NO action that isn’t set to QT events- tapping buttons as
they are shown on the screen to produce a desired effect.
The
story involves three androids in the near future, 2038. There’s
Connor, who is a Police Officer (sort of), Kara, a housekeeper, and
Markus, a caretaker of an elderly man who turns revolutionary. After
digging his own murdered corpse out of a junk yard of squirming
android parts. Yes. There is creep-factor all through this game.
And
it makes you think. Racism is the main theme of this game. Androids
are slaves. They assert themselves as people who merely want freedom.
Far harder to get one’s head around than racism
prior to this story’s time period. They are alive, they say. Based
on their behavior, I side with them. Of course I believe machines
WILL replace mankind someday, and the world will be better off for
it. I would instantly sympathize with an artificial life form. But
anyone else? What would they think?
There
happens to be a survey in the early part of the game that the player
may take. Questions like “Do you believe in God?” and “Would
you let an Android look after your children?” appear in the survey.
When you are done taking the survey, you get to see results from
EVERYONE else who has played the game and done the survey. I wasn’t
shocked, but you MAY BE as to how people answered.
The
story is INTENSE; I actually cried (just a bit) during some of the
more intense scenes. I will also point out that EVERY choice you make
in the game is PERMANENT and the choices pop up CONSTANTLY, right up
until the very last SECOND of the game. EVERYTHING you decide
directly affects the outcome of the game. It is a movie you make, a
story you LIVE- AS YOU GO. So THINK carefully (but QUICKLY…
decisions are on a timer).
The
graphics are PERFECT. I played it in 1080p and graphics were PERFECT.
The music is PERFECT-
it grows and swells as the game progresses as if it was a movie.
Bottom
line- if you play something other than just First-Person Shooters and
dragon-laiden RPGs, GET THIS GAME. It’s beautiful, full of twists
and turns, and well made.
I
am NOT used to this kind of game or “genre” (if it has one). I
have played and finished EVERY kind of game there is, for the most
part, for a VERY long time. So I rate it on how it made me feel.
9.5/10.
