JUDGEMENT- PS5 (SEGA)

Judgement- PS5
I was (and still am) a huge fan of Shenmue, ever since I got it on the Dreamcast all those years ago. Making my way around the sandbox world was so intense to me, interacting with almost everyone and nipping away at the story until completion.

Over twenty years later I find myself playing Judgement, another SEGA game with very similar elements, as well as striking differences, but still just as fun. There is a mystery to be solved, and your character, Yagami Takayugi, is the detective doing the job. As well, this character is a lawyer… who has allegiances to the Yakuza. The characters in his midst are a strange mix of law enforcement (both straight and corrupt), other lawyers, Yakuza families, and just plain thugs. A deep story surrounding a drug developed by a pharmaceutical company to cure dementia, that includes plots, murders, and the like.
So, obviously there will be action. Lots of fighting in the streets. This is one of the things about the game I didn’t like. I feel there was too much pointless fighting. Yagami (or “Tak” as he is sometimes called) is almost CONSTANTLY under attack from thugs all over the city. Yes, everywere he goes there are roaming gangs lookin’ for trouble, and he must settle their hash again and again to the point where it gets a bit redundant. Certainly there are fights that are pertainent to the story, but many if not most are heaped on with a trowel. There are side missions to earn extra yen, which is needed for first aid kits and food to boost your health. There are also comical little moments that are quite amusing, and of course there are game rooms where, very much like in Shenmue, the player can access classic SEGA arcade games and play them. Good times.

You also must do your detective work. There are points where you must question criminals and witnesses, both outside and inside of a court room, and to maximize bonus you must ask questions in the correct order, and present evidence properly. The very last court case must be done in the EXACT correct order or you canot advance.

The graphics are 4K at 60fps, so there is nothing lacking there. Stunning color and attention to detail make this one quite realistic.

Overall this game is well worth a spin. I found myself looking forward to seeing what was going to happen next. I strongly recommend this one to the so-called “core” gamer. Powerful (albeit redundant) action and eye-popping graphics make this one worthwhile. I give SEGA’s Judgement for PS5 a 7/10.
